Caring for your Amaryllis plant

How to make sure your Amaryllis grows beautiful blooms this Winter

Although Amaryllis  belladona is a native plant in many South American countries, it is commonly seen blooming indoors during the holidays in the northern hemisphere.  Northern growers are able to enjoy this plant by forcing winter blooms after a period of dormancy.

Below you will find tips on how to care for your amaryllis plant during it's bloom season and the steps you can take to force your Amaryllis to bloom again year after year for the holiday season.

Continue scrolling to learn how to care for your Amaryllis post-bloom!

How to care for your Amaryllis plant post-blooming

1.

When your Amaryllis plant is no longer producing blooms, cut the flower stems back to the bulb, but do not remove the leaves as they will continue to help the plant absorb energy to be stored in the bulb

2.

Place your amaryllis plant in a sunny spot and treat it like a regular houseplant; water when the soil is dried out, fertilize once over the spring/summer months

3.

Around August 1st, stop watering your plant

4.

At the beginning of September, remove the amaryllis from the soil, trim back the leaves and roots on the bottom of the bulb; place the bulb in a cool, dark and dry spot.  I typically put mine in our basement where it is dark and cool.

5.

At the start of November, re-pot your bulb, water and place the plant in a warm room with bright indirect light

6.

For Southern hemisphere bulbs, you will see blooms in about six weeks

7.

Adjust this schedule according to when you want your plant to bloom!
